Join Carolyn Gimian for a weekend exploring one of the most treasured teachings of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche.

“The question that we need to look into is how we can overcome spiritual materialism fully and properly, without simply brushing it off as an undesirable consequence. The question is how we can actually work with the tendencies toward spiritual and psychological materialism that exist in the world today. How can we work with those things properly? How can we transmute them into livable, workable, enlightened basic sanity?

- Chogyam Trungpa

The Sadhana of Mahamudra is a powerful statement of the fundamental obstacles we encounter on the spiritual path and in our lives generally -- and how we can overcome them. Chogyam Trungpa presented this text to his students fifty years ago, in the late 1960s, even before he came to America. The text and the teachings he gave on this material speak to the issues of spiritual materialism and self-deception that arise on the path of dharma.

In our weekend seminar, we will practice and study the sadhana together. Talks, discussion, and small group contemplations and exercises will explore the basic principles of the sadhana and how we can personally relate to this material. The sitting practice of meditation will also be part of the weekend.

This is a program for new and old practitioners of the sadhana. It will be co-taught by Carolyn Gimian, Jade Weston Kranz, and Sara Lewis. Carolyn, a long-time editor of Chogyam Trungpa’s work and the Executive Director of the Chogyam Trungpa Institute at Naropa University, will present the “old dog” perspective, while Jade and Sara will present the experience of a practitioner making a fresh connection to the material.

We will draw from Devotion and Crazy Wisdom, which presents the teachings given by Chogyam Trungpa on the Sadhana of Mahamudra. (This book is available through Kalapa Media, click the link above to purchase)
